What Is a Hysterosalpingogram?

It’s actually pretty simple, a Hysterosalpingogram (HSG) test is a radiographic procedure used to evaluate tubal patency. A HSG involves injecting radiopaque fluid into the fallopian tubes via an ultrasound guided catheter. This allows us to look for blockages in the tubes.

During the exam we’ll inject dye into the cervix and uterus to help visualize the anatomy of these structures.

The doctor may also perform a laparoscopy during the same appointment. If there are any problems found during the laparoscopic exam, we will complete a Hysteroscopy which requires a small incision in the abdomen.

A hysteroscopy is performed when a Hysterosalpingography shows normal tubes or shows that one tube appears blocked. We do this because a hysteroscopy allows us to see inside the tubes without having to open them. It helps determine whether the concern lies within the fallopian tubes themselves or somewhere else such as the ovaries, uterine lining, etc.

Hysteroscopy is a minimally invasive surgery involving the insertion of a thin fibre optic camera called a hysteroscope. After inserting the scope, the surgeon uses the scope to examine the cavity of the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries. The video monitor provides real time images of the inside of the body.

The HSG test is usually done after the first trimester of pregnancy to prevent radiation exposure to the fetus.

You could say that we’ve been able to put together a great deal of information in a short space of time. But in reality, we’ve had to cut out much more than we’d planned.

Our job now is to make sure our clients understand exactly how important it is to find the right balance between creativity and pragmatism in order to achieve success.

What are the things you need to prepare for an HSG test in Kharghar?

For those of you who haven’t heard of HSG, it’s an examination done during pregnancy to determine whether there are any problems with the fallopian tubes. This test is performed after 20 weeks gestation.

This exam is typically used when you’ve had 3 unsuccessful cycles of IVF or when you’ve tried donor eggs and are uncertain why you aren’t pregnant.

It’s also very useful to rule out ectopic pregnancies.

The procedure takes approximately 15-20 minutes and involves inserting a thin tube (catheter) directly into the uterus via the vagina.

After insertion of the catheter, we inject a small amount of contrast dye into the cervix and then proceed to perform a Hysterosalpingogram.

During the HSG, radiologists insert a special X-ray machine called a fluoroscope, which allows them to view the inside of the uterus.

They watch the flow of the dye, which helps identify blockages and abnormalities within the uterine cavity.

Once the entire procedure is complete, we remove the catheter and send the patient home.

There may be some discomfort associated with the procedure, and patients should drink plenty of fluids prior to the test.

Most women do not experience any bleeding following the procedure, and most recover quickly.

In rare cases, however, complications such as heavy vaginal bleeding, spotting, cramping, infection and pelvic inflammatory disease may occur.

You should contact your doctor immediately if you have any signs or symptoms of these conditions.

How Hysterosalpingogram is Done at Kharghar?

In a nutshell, HSG is an X-ray test that allows doctors to view the fallopian tubes and uterus for signs of blockages. This helps them determine whether there are any problems that could prevent pregnancy.

The procedure involves inserting a thin tube (catheter) into the vagina. A small amount of dye is injected through the catheter, which travels through the body and collects in the uterus. Doctors review the images taken during the test to look for abnormalities.

Although this is considered a minor surgery, it can cause discomfort. If you experience abdominal cramping after the procedure, you may wish to postpone future visits until the symptoms subside.

In addition to the above mentioned risks, there are also complications that can occur with the test. These include infection, bleeding and injury to nerves and blood vessels near the pelvis.
